FDA Nutrition Labeling Rules, Explained

These are the rules a Nutrition Facts label has to follow, one page each, with the numbers, the paragraph of 21 CFR that sets them, and a worked example on a real product. No legal advice, just what the regulation says and how it plays out on the panel.

24 rules explained. Each page cites the current eCFR text and notes when it was last checked.

Where these rules come from

Nutrition labeling lives in 21 CFR part 101: section 101.9 sets the panel itself (nutrients, rounding, formats, exemptions), 101.12 sets the reference amounts behind serving sizes, 101.4 the ingredient statement, 101.7 the net quantity, and 101.13 through 101.83 the claims. Allergen labeling comes from the FALCPA and FASTER Acts. Meat and poultry products follow the USDA equivalents in 9 CFR. The pages above quote the current eCFR text and link to it.

When you know which rule sets each line, you have the answer ready when a buyer or co-packer asks. Enter your recipe, then see your label: the calorie count, the nutrient content claims you qualify for and your allergen line show free, no card required, and $29 unlocks every other nutrient value and %DV in every FDA format your product qualifies for, with the ingredient statement and allergen declaration. Or send us the recipe and we build it for you. Start your label, or check the label formats first.
